Using my iMac as a router?

I'll try to keep it sweet and simple.

I just upgraded my Comcast internet and they gave me a new modem with both a Ethernet and USB Type B (see here http://www.folcom.cz/img/USB_konektory.g if)

I have two brand new iMacs and two Playstation 3s in my house.

Right now I have my modem plugged into my computer via Ethernet, and it's connecting to the web just fine. I'm also sharing my internet via Airport so I'm pretty much using my iMac as a wireless router.

Here is the problem the Playstation 3 doesn't support the N signal and won't connect to my iMac. The other iMac can connect to it fine. Now I really need an internet connection to our Playstations for two reasons. I play Call of Duty and my Dad uses Netflicks.

Now would a simple USB to Ethernet adapter work? I have four USB ports in the back of my iMac only one I use. Could I just run Ethernet to the two Playstations?

@Andy every router I've used always slows down my connection. My parents are cheap and won't buy a high end $100+ wireless router. I've bought a $75 Wireless N Router and it got 20MB/s tops. When I use my iMac I get around 30-35Mb/s and my sister's iMac which is upstairs get's 25-30Mb/s

@Ben. The password maybe the problem. Is there anyway I can connect you via instant message?

Save yourself the hassle and buy a router. A good one can be had for $45.

It shouldn't have anything to do with the Wireless N. 802.11n is backwards compatible with the older g and b standards, so the PS3 should still be able to connect. Are you enabling encryption (WEP) on the network? Those "passwords" are hacks and are vendor specific- the actual WEP key is a string of numbers and letters from A-F. So the password you put on the iMac won't work for the PS3. try disabling the protection. The other issue may be range- Ad-Hoc networks (the ones where you share instead of using a router) only have a range of about 30ft.

I need help installing a wireless adapter.?

A friend of mine gave me an Encore Electronics SuperG Wireless LAN USB Adapter. On the back are several alpha-numeric numbers. I have a driver for it, but I don't think it works for Windows Vista (my operating system). I have NO IDEA about this stuff, and I can't get him to help me out now, so if someone can help me find what I need to install this thing, I'd be REALLY grateful!!!!

The numbers on the back are:

Which router should i get?

I want a wireless router to Connect 2 desktop computers to the internet, but i don't know which to get.
I also want to know if i should get a USB adapter or a PCI card network adapter.
I have dsl internet, and i just use it for surfing the web, NOT gaming.
Which would you recommend? Are G routers good, or should i get a N router?

I work in USA doing residential/consumer technical support for a major multinational pc manufacturer based in USA.

First, Get A Class N Router!!!!. Nothing Else Will Do!!! Whatever the brand, get Class N. n=100mbps, g=54mbps. N doesn't much more cost ($20?) and will replace G and is backward compatible to G. Get N.

Class N will be nicer when you get better broadband service also (cable TV vendor is faster than DSL -- dsl was hot in the early-mid '90's -- now it's as dead as ISDN.). Class N also has slightly longer range (distance) so it's more flexible in usage.

For ease of installation and replacement, I would get a Class N USB adapter instead of PCI. Besides, you probably don't know what PCI slots, if any are available in the desktop pc's. Also PCI slots are being dropped by manufacturer's in favor of other formats such as PCIx-16. It would take some research to get the right device and expect it to work when you open the pc to install it.

Go Class N w/ USB in all devices. You won't regret it. What brand? I've worked with Dlink, Netgear, Linksys, Airline -- at your level, it's all the same. Going with the longest factory warranty is a good idea. All vendors meet the same standards, so the products are the same. All vendors use the same designs for standards and manufacturing else one would rule and the rest be bankrupt.

Go for the longest factory warranty and second for the "best" possible customer service/tech support -- those are the important issues. If you've got a warranty, you can at least sue for replacement, but it's nice if tech support just says "ok" and ships it right out. It's also nice if tech support helps you set it up. It's not your computer maker's issue for certain.

I don't know what router companies have USA tech support but you could find out and call them. That's called "pre-sale support " in the biz, when the cx has a question and calls tech support.

G'day and thank you for calling tech support.

Netgear USB wireless N adapter compatability question...?

My sis-in-law has a Gateway laptop & I believe it's wireless card is dying. It randomly drops the wireless connection. it worked fine for about 6 months then the problem began. My laptop works fine at her house. I told her to buy a wireless N USB adapter & use it instead of the built in card. She bought a Netgear wireless N USB adapter and it has a button on it that says "push n connect". It says on the box to push that button then push the "push n connect" button on her router. I think that is stupid because it kinda defeats the purpose of a wireless network, but that's besides the point... Anyway, my question is, will her Apple Airport Express router support that Netgear wireless N adapter? Yes, her router (Airport Express) IS wireless N. That "push n connect" button worries me a little. I don't think there will be a problem because the Airport routers support just about everything (I have the Extreme). If anyone has a setup like this or knows about this stuff please let me know.

Help?Im thinking about buying a GateWay Nv79?

Wilocity: 60GHz wireless revolution begins at CES

If all goes according to Wilocity's plan, the startup's dream of high-speed wireless networking will take a crucial step toward reality in January.

That's because Wilocity , which is leading the charge for next-generation technology called 802.11ad designed to reach 7 gigabits per second over short distances, plans to show off a variety of devices using its technology at the mammoth CES trade show that month.

"We'll be able to show you what your life would be like on 60GHz," said Mark Grodzinsky, Wilocity's vice president of marketing. He predicts that the first devices to use Wilocity's 802.11ad chips will be notebooks, Ultrabooks, tablets , and docking stations that can connect those devices to peripherals such as displays.
