Why won't my scroll wheel work?

I have an HP Pavilion Elite E9220y desktop with Windows 7 home premium. In my opinion, it runs flawlessly in almost every way. The only problem is that my mouse wheel wont work. I don't remember how long this has been happening for, but I don't think it has always been this way since I got it. I have a Rosewill wireless keyboard and mouse. I had it forever my old computer as well. The keyboard is fantastic. It's never malfunctioned and I've only ever had to change the battery once.
The mouse has a lot shorter of a life span, but it generally worked. Now all of a sudden, I can't scroll when I'm in word, or on the internet. I can click the wheel and do the slide thing, but it won't scroll. In Google earth, either way I scroll the wheel, it always zooms in.

It could be my mouse, but I don't think so. I reinstalled the drivers, still did the same thing. I tried my sister's Microsoft wireless USB mouse, it still didn't work. I tried the standard edition HP corded mouse that came with the computer. The scroll still wouldn't work.

I opened up the control panel and tried to see if there was a setting that was turned off that allows the wheel to scroll. I couldn't find anything.

Can anybody help me?

maybe it's broken?:O

Since NO mouse scrolls, it is the mouse settings.
Use the "help" section, "mouse" to find the location quickly.
Win 7 relocated/renamed many control functions.

What can cause a computer to occasionally get stuck just after detecting the drives?

I built a computer by myself during March of last year, and in the beginning it was OK, but recently there has been a somewhat concerning problem.

Usually when my computer starts up (i.e. immediately after I've pressed the power button) the computer whirs into life, detects the drives, goes through the POST and loads Windows XP.

The problem that I’m concerned about is that sometimes when I start it up, the computer hangs just after the drive detection. I solve it by hitting the power button, flicking the switch on the PSU, removing the power cable, waiting about 10 secs, then plugging the cable back in, followed by flicking the switch back to the ON position. The computer will then start normally. (Until I've performed my "solution" pressing the power button gives me the same system hang) The problem only occasionally crops up, but when it does it's a worry, and I’m getting the feeling that it's occurring more frequently

The nature of my solution (dealing mainly with the PSU) leads me to believe it might be a PSU problem; or the fact that when I built the PC, the PSU's wattage was too low for the PC. The PSU constantly runs warm to hot, and even though I know this is usual with PSUs, I think mine might be warmer than usual as you can feel it from the outside of my case

Can anybody confirm/correct my suspicions and suggest a course of action to prevent the problem occurring?

Here are my specs:

- Hiper Power 580W HPU-4M580-PU PSU
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Processor
- Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H motherboard
- 4GB of Corsair DDR2 PC2-6400 TwinX RAM (2x 2GB)
- Asus ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
- 500GB Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 SATA HDD
- TSSTcorp SH-S223Q SATA CD/DVD-RW
- 80GB Western Digital WDC WD800BB-00JKA0 IDE HDD (this was carried over from my last PC and is 4 years older than the rest of the PC, but hasn't had any errors to my knowledge)
- Standard 3.5in Floppy Disk Drive
- 4-port USB 2.0 Header bracket

there are 2 Fan sockets on the motherboard, both were already used, an extra fan was added by using a Y connector cable

USB devices that are usually plugged in when booting:
- Belkin N+ Wireless Dongle
- Microsoft Wireless desktop receiver 3.1A (connected to a wireless keyboard and mouse)
- Epson Stylus DX7450 All-in-One (not registered as being connected by windows unless powered on)

I doubt that this PSU is going to die through regular use if its load is under it's value, as I've only had it just over a year. That is unless it's a inherent fault with the product

Why doesn't my wireless keyboard and mouse set work?

When moving my computer to a new desk I dropped the USB receiver for my Creative wireless kb/m set and it stopped working. Effectively trapping me on the Welcome screen of Windows XP. So I bought a new wireless kb/m set, this time I chose Microsoft brand hoping it would be plug and play, at least enough to type my password and install the new software. But that didn't work. So I borrowed a Lenovo wired kb and m, but that did not work either. I have long thrown out the kb and m that came with the HP PC, and now I don't know what to do. My computer is a paper weight.

I know it isn't a signal or interference issue, and I have followed all instructions as much as I can being limited to the Welcome screen. If you have any solutions, technical or physical, let me know. I'm desperate to get on my computer.
As stated above, it is not an interference issue. The old Creative wireless kb/m are no longer plugged in via receiver.

The PC is old, purchased in 2005. I'll be purchasing a new one as soon as I can, but until then I need access to my files, at least long enough to back them up to an external drive.

I have tried the new MS wireless kb/m in 4 different USB ports to no effect. A friend suggested I might look in to accessing the BIOS or setup before the Welcome screen, though I do not have the know how to trust myself without intructions.

Though slowly, the computer was still working just fine up until I moved it and then dropped the Creative receiver.
Also, as stated above, a wired Lenovo kb/m set had no effect. I'm not sure if there is a safer brand to use on a circa 2005 HP PC running XP.

Microsoft Wireless Mouse not working?

I have a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard 1.0A and a Wireless Optical Mouse 2.0A and have had them around 3 years or so. They were given to me with a computer but as the computer wasn't working I didn't have a chance to use them until about a year and a half ago. Up until now they have been working fine, almost without event. I currently have them plugged into a laptop and my girlfriend unplugged them the other day to plug into her laptop so she could play a game. After plugging them back in to the original laptop only the keyboard will work. I have pressed the sync button on the receiver and then on the mouse itself and it seems to work as the lights on the receiver go from flashing to solid, yet when I move the mouse it doesn't respond on the screen. I tried changing the batteries, moving all other devices away from the reciever, unlpugging it, resetting the computer, everything. I searched Microsoft Support but it seems my mouse is an outdated model and there is literally NO info on how to fix it. I tried the steps they suggested on other Wireless models but to no avail. What could the problem be?

If anyone has any ideas or advice without regurgitating what I know already I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 Review

Andrew Moore-Crispin reviews the Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 on this episode of Gadget TV. A Internet video series by butterscotch.com.

Why Tablets Are So Important

In 1992, I was asked to work on a project for Microsoft that focused on pen computing. Unless you are in the industry, you have probably never even heard of this project, but the idea was to create a tablet-like device that used a stylus for navigation and input.

At the time, pen computing was considered the next big thing in tech and some people were hailing it the future of PCs. For a lot of reasons, especially the poor handwriting technology available at the time, it was a commercial flop. On the bright side, while working on the project, I got to spend some time with Bill Gates and ask him about his thoughts on the future of personal computing.

Microsoft Arc Keyboard Review

Unfortunately, the be deficient in of dedicated arrow keys could be a difficulty for many users. When selecting items with the arrow keys on the keyboard, using the all-in-one arrow key takes some getting Euphemistic pre-owned to. Even after using it for a month, I still have some problems using it accurately.

As indicated by the name, the Arc keyboard curves on top, making it more untroubled to epitome on when compared with a ideal keyboard. Of by all means, any keyboard takes some era to get old to, and after using the Arc Keyboard for a few days, I was typing comfortably without any errors.
