How does the microphone work on MOTOROKR S9 headphones?

I have a pair of the Motorola MOTOROKR S9 wireless headphones. They look like this;

I think the mic is located inside the right earphone..
How is this picking up my voice so well?
Also, why do ANY bluetooth headsets have any boom at all if these dont need one?
Is this boom mostly just a place to house the electronics, etc..?....
They cannot make the single ear ones so small as to be just a plug in the ear only with no mic extension?
Please tell me how mine is able to pick up my voice so well with only the plugs in my ears...and why arent single ear ones made the same way? ...in-ear only with no boom whatsoever, not even a tiny one...as in these....
