I want a wireless router to Connect 2 desktop computers to the internet, but i don't know which to get.
I also want to know if i should get a USB adapter or a PCI card network adapter.
I have dsl internet, and i just use it for surfing the web, NOT gaming.
Which would you recommend? Are G routers good, or should i get a N router?
I work in USA doing residential/consumer technical support for a major multinational pc manufacturer based in USA.
First, Get A Class N Router!!!!. Nothing Else Will Do!!! Whatever the brand, get Class N. n=100mbps, g=54mbps. N doesn't much more cost ($20?) and will replace G and is backward compatible to G. Get N.
Class N will be nicer when you get better broadband service also (cable TV vendor is faster than DSL -- dsl was hot in the early-mid '90's -- now it's as dead as ISDN.). Class N also has slightly longer range (distance) so it's more flexible in usage.
For ease of installation and replacement, I would get a Class N USB adapter instead of PCI. Besides, you probably don't know what PCI slots, if any are available in the desktop pc's. Also PCI slots are being dropped by manufacturer's in favor of other formats such as PCIx-16. It would take some research to get the right device and expect it to work when you open the pc to install it.
Go Class N w/ USB in all devices. You won't regret it. What brand? I've worked with Dlink, Netgear, Linksys, Airline -- at your level, it's all the same. Going with the longest factory warranty is a good idea. All vendors meet the same standards, so the products are the same. All vendors use the same designs for standards and manufacturing else one would rule and the rest be bankrupt.
Go for the longest factory warranty and second for the "best" possible customer service/tech support -- those are the important issues. If you've got a warranty, you can at least sue for replacement, but it's nice if tech support just says "ok" and ships it right out. It's also nice if tech support helps you set it up. It's not your computer maker's issue for certain.
I don't know what router companies have USA tech support but you could find out and call them. That's called "pre-sale support " in the biz, when the cx has a question and calls tech support.
it works very well- but i have 2 tips to give you.
- enable WEP (encryption keys)
- beware of microwaves. (im serious.) Microwaves disrupt wireless signal by RF interference for the duration the microwave is active.

What kind of network adapters ( wireless ) for desktop is better: usb or PCI ?
USB allows you to move the adapter around with the cable "stand" they usually come with, or you can use a USB cable to plug the adapter in in order to allow you to move it around to get the best signal.
A card slot adaoter cannot be moved and is inheritly less likely to pickup as good a signal 1: Because it can't be moved, 2: The antenna is right up against the metal case of the desktop

My sis-in-law has a Gateway laptop & I believe it's wireless card is dying. It randomly drops the wireless connection. it worked fine for about 6 months then the problem began. My laptop works fine at her house. I told her to buy a wireless N USB adapter & use it instead of the built in card. She bought a Netgear wireless N USB adapter and it has a button on it that says "push n connect". It says on the box to push that button then push the "push n connect" button on her router. I think that is stupid because it kinda defeats the purpose of a wireless network, but that's besides the point... Anyway, my question is, will her Apple Airport Express router support that Netgear wireless N adapter? Yes, her router (Airport Express) IS wireless N. That "push n connect" button worries me a little. I don't think there will be a problem because the Airport routers support just about everything (I have the Extreme). If anyone has a setup like this or knows about this stuff please let me know.

What do I need to do get the printer (Epson NX415) to play nice with my wireless USB (NetGear) adapter? I am not trying to make the printer wireless (unless that is the only option). I just use the wireless USB adapter to connect to another computer to share some files. The printer works great for a little while then it makes the USB adapter so it does not find the network & so I am not connected to the other computer or the internet. I have the Epson printer plugged directly into a USB port & just need it to print with the computer it is plugged into.

My wireless signal strength is 100% and I have excellent connection, but for some reason the signal keeps getting dropped. I'll be on a website, as I am right now, and suddenly it will say "Network Not Found." (Even while it says this, it still shows I have excellent connection and signal.) I use a SMC USB adapter plugged into my Dell desktop PC, Windows XP Professional. I have a CD that came with my SMC adapter and that is also installed. I have tried un-installing that, and the wireless driver and starting over, and nothing fixes it. The internet will not work without that CD being installed.
I constantly have to "Start" Wireless Zero Configuration in Administrative tools, because my network is never recognized by Windows, and I cant get Windows to automatically manage my wireless network, and Wireless Zero Connection NEVER starts on Startup even though it says Automatic.
We tried having our internet service provider come out to fix it and he sat on my computer for 2 hours and claimed that "someone" had messed with the "Security" settings and that he changed it back. Then he claimed he had fixed the problem and left. After he was gone, it kept doing the same thing, dropping signal. I've looked all over the internet for solutions to this problem and have tried several things, and nothing works. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Yes everything has been checked when the internet service provider guy came to my house. I was also thinking the problem could be the devices themselves... I just don't know what to do to fix anything. Thanks. =)

Cirago USB To HDMI Display Adapter UDA2000
23.05.12
Most new PCs have HDMI ports for outputting high-definition video to HDTVs, but just a couple of years ago that wasn’t the case--and if you want to watch high-def content (for example, anything you buy on iTunes) on a big screen, getting it to that screen isn’t easy. The Cirago USB to HDMI Display Adapter solves the problem by turning your HDTV (or any other display that accepts HDMI input) into a second monitor that connects to your PC through a USB 2.0 port instead of a graphics card.
Not only is this approach relatively inexpensive--the adapter costs $60 (as of November 5, 2011)--but it also circumvents the hassles that can arise with alternatives, such as streaming to a set-top box via a wireless or wired home network. The ability to send material via a USB port can also benefit businesses that want to connect multiple displays or a projector to a single computer.
