Perhaps someone can help me with sporadic intermittent connection issues
Its on an impatient nube relatives computer
Its in an area with a ton of competing signals
Only one computer of the 4 seems to have intermittent sporadic connection problems
Its a standard G setup on a standard USRobotics Turbo G router
The wireless router is free , clear and unobstructed
The offending computer is in clear view across a living room about 20 feet away
Various channels have been tried that seemed open
Recently the wireless router was set to automatic and somehow it had settled on the congested channel 6 automatically by itself
Even on relatively open channels 1 and 3 similar results occurred
I have swapped in new computers , and new wireless network cards to no avail
I am using WEP 64 for encryption
I have tried moving the router over a foot or so
The wireless is now set to "g only" as opposed to "mixed " ( B and G)
The SSID is not generic
Its a low case computer I have been using generic Zyadas G USB adapters
Any ideas ? The relative is both a nube and relatively dubious that one computer out of the lot can only have these sporadic connection issues
As I said I have changed the computer and done a number of fresh installs to rule out spyware
Reception is a very wi fi dense area of upscale condos and apartments in a clear view highrise that could get any of a number of rogue signals drift in out the blue
Its difficult working with relatives at the best of times I guess.
Time to shove off and move on , still I do not like to leave open problems dangling
Any ideas would be very much appreciated - lest I be seen as a wireless networking incompetent
Well, if you have 3 computers working fine and one that isn't the problem pretty much must be that computer. Are there any noise generation devices near this computer? Phones, microwaves, TV's, baby monitors, anything with a transmitter/receiver in it?
Have you tried a different brand of wirelessadapter instead of the Zyadas?

I haven't used the "Zyadas G" adapters but they probably use a "realtek" or "broadcom" chip set, you should be able to tell which with some checking.
Be sure you have the latest drivers for that chipset! Drivers will cause all sorts of issues if not updated. That is why I try to use adapters that come from a company that updates regularly. In a HIGH density area it sometimes will be difficult to get a good connection, even cordeless phones, wireless intercoms, etc. can cause disconnections.
In one case I know about a microwave oven was blocking nearly all channels when it was in use!
I also have found that wireless speakers cause all sorts of issues with wifi connections as they use lots of bandwidth. If there aren't any clean channels, expect problems you simply won't avoid all interference. I would also change to WPA encoding for safety sake, it only takes a few seconds to decode and get WEP codes!
When in doubt, stay wired!

Switch your WLAN to use Channel 11. Very few WLANs are configured to use this channel. So you willl be quite free from the interference from others often on Channel 6.

it is a small extra cost, but try investing in an adapter that you can install a directional antenna.
it filters out a lot of noise compared to an omnidirectional.
simply aim it at the router and i bet much of your issue will be resolved!

My computer comes equipped with wireless LAN hardware already: USB Wireless 802.11 b/g Adapter
Stop me now if i have the wrong hardware....
so im trying to make my computer into a wireless hotspot/access point so my PSP, Wii, or PS3 can get access to it, and play online.
How do i achieve this, i've been searching all over google and left stuck.
My internet router is connected to my brothers computers (main network holder?), then a Ethernet cable is connected to my port, and i gain access from their, so how could i use my computer as an "wireless router"
but don't tell me to buy a wireless router, thats not my plan....
You can't. Your laptop's wireless NIC is just that. A Network Interface Card. It's not a wireless base station. It's made to initiate a connection to a base. It doesn't listen for incoming connections.
I'm afraid you WILL need to get yourself a wireless router, or you won't be able to do anything at all.
Not your plan... It was never my plan to get old but shi# happens.

I just want to know whether I can Simply plug my 3G USB modem to it and share the Internet.....
no you cannot with this router. you will need a different model, like this one: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/edimax-3g- 6200n-wireless-router-04277924-pdt.html< br />
but make sure the router you get supports your specific 3g modem, they are picky sometimes.
