i have a wireless netgear router at my dorm right now, i'm on spring break that's why i can't try this out myself, i found an ac adapter that can plug into my truck battery charger thing (the hole you put in phone chargers and stuff) and i want to put my netgear router in there so i can have wifi on my iphone where ever i go. But does the netgear router give off wifi by itself or does it have to have an ethernet cord plugged into it from a modem or wall socket?
no. you need to have it connected to your modem or wall socket.

There are wireless 3G Routers that use a cell provider's 3G connection to broadcast a wifi signal. You must pay for monthly 3G service to use it, as well. I believe Netgear makes some of these routers. However, your router is most likely not one of them.
This means that you'll need a wired Ethernet connection going into your router to broadcast wifi. So in your truck, you probably won't be able to use it. In your hotel room, though, it's possible.
Sorry...

Yes. As long as the router has electricity pumping through it, it will work. So I imagine the car adapter would work just fine.
Obviously, if it's not connected to an Internet connection it will only be useful for WLAN filesharing, printer sharing, local media streaming, etc... but it will still work.
Lots of people use routers to create local networks without actually having an Internet connection. It's a pretty common practice.

Is this internet speed slow? .59 Mbps?
Isn't that insanely low? I get like 5 MBps at college i think, so why do i get such crappy speed at home (that is the speed for my parent's wireless router).
It is a netgear wireless N router, so it's not the router because it's relatively new. I think it's my isp (road runner). How do I fix this? Are there settings I can mess with from home, or do i need to call road runner and pay to have them fix it? Is this even a slow speed or am I crazy?
Yes, I said .59 (point five nine) megaBITS per second, or .07375 megaBYTES per second.
