Less Bandwidth Wireless than Wired?

I have a 10Mbps downstream connection. The computer that connects to the router sees basically all of it, but all of the computers connected to the router wirelessly are maxing out at about 5.2Mbps. Each one is using a Wireless G or backwards compatible Wireless N adapter. I'm using the Linksys WRT54GL router with DD-WRT firmware. I have Frame Burst, CTS threshold, Afterburner, and Optimize for Gaming turned off. I've set the ACK timing down to 0. Does anyone have any tips to help me achieve the proper speed on my wireless connections?

Are you getting your 5.2Mbps figure from a speed test website or from the connection status on the computer?

On 802.11g you'll be lucky to see 22Mbps of actual usable throughput (even though 802.11g is 54Mbps). You could be catching some interference or all of the devices on your WLAN are using the network causing congestion.

A WLAN AP is not like a wired ethernet switch in the aspect of dedicated point to point bandwidth. It is more like a hub. All of the devices share the available WLAN bandwidth (if two devices are going through the AP at the same time to hit a device on your wired LAN, the two wireless device's bandwidth is cut in half).

If you are sure the only device using the WLAN is the device you are speed testing then look for interference. Are there many other access points in your neighborhood? There are only 3 non-overlapping channels in 802.11b/g and that doesn't give you much room to play with. Do you have a 2.4GHz cordless phone? Unplug it and try it if so.

If interference is the issue my recommendation is to switch to 802.11a. There are many more channels and it is less crowded.

Sometimes the cause of the issue is much simpler than what you expect. I'm notorious for changing every setting I can get my hands on only to find there is several APs and cordless phones nearby a customers AP.

Trying to connect my desktop to wireless network?

using a linksys wireless-g pci adapter and a belkin wireless router model f5d7234-4 v 4 When I try connecting it just doesnt connect, I can see the network I'm looking for when I press View Available Wireless Networks, but I just can't get it to connect. I don't really know anything about the linksys adapter, it's just what was on the desktop at another location and now it's been brought here. Any help would be great. Thanks

Connecting Laptop to Router? (Wifi)?

(Before I get started I must say, even though I may be a bit computer savvy I am just a teenager trying to get a laptop to work so please use simple terms with me. Lol)

Ok so here is the deal: I just now received a free laptop from a friend, it's an older laptop - rebuilt with Windows XP but it was free, so I'm happy. :) It is a Toshiba satellite 1415-S173. Ok, so what I am having a problem with is CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET. At my house I have a computer connected to the internet by a cable provider and in another room my mom and dad's computer is connected by the wireless router that we also have in our room (linksys). When I got the laptop I thought It would be a breeze to get it connected to the internet. I assumed all I would have to do is go to the network connections and there already be a linksys connection found in the area and all I would have to do is connect. That was obviously not the case. So far I have called my Cable Provider (Time Warner) to try and help me out - the lady told me the reason may be because the computer might not have a wireless adapter. But when I look on the right side of a laptop there is that little wirless symbol etched into the side with a little switch under it that says "on off" and it is currently switched to on but the little light next to it does not turn on. I also called Toshiba and after they put me on hold so they could still see if they had a manual that went that far back -_- I was told that I may need to purchase something from radioshack, and then i was told i may also download something from their site. Right now I am just CONFUSED. I don't know what to do at all, and all I want to be able to do is connect to the freaking internet. LMAO. I beg of you to help me if you can. :) Thank you!! :D

How do I resolve wireless Internet connection problems?

I am having ongoing issues with this and have tried everything I can think of to try. I have a Linksys USB300N adapter plugged into my two year old HP desktop. I just bought it two weeks ago however and took the adapter off of my old computer that died. My old one with Windows 98 was working fine as far as the Internet. My new one has Windows Media on it. I have a wireless router and my computer shows a very strong signal but it will not connect with my router. It will not show any address other than all 0's. But it will connect with no problem with a neighbor's router that is showing a 7% signal strength. I have had three friends bring over laptop computers today and they all connected with my router with no problem and were on the Internet in less than a minute. One was also able to connect with my neighbors signal, though two could not read that signal. That shows my adapter is working or I could not get on the Internet at all and my router is working or the laptops would not connect. In fact, it shows a full signal (5 bars) for my router even though I cannot connect yet I am on my neighbors and on the Internet even though it is showing no bars at all as far as strength.

I am getting very frustrated with this. The only thing I have not tried is port forwarding and assigning a static address. I would have tried that but the box where you do that is grayed out and will not let me put anything in there, even when I went to manual. It is now, again, on Automatic for everything. Any ideas? The router is connected by cable to another desktop and there is no problem there.

Any ideas? I am out of them. Thanks, in advance.

HP TouchSmart 520-1010a touchscreen PC

For anyone who wants more than just a typical, boring old home computer, the HP TouchSmart 520-1010a is there for you. It's an all-in-one computer that's easy to set up and use, and it features a built-in 23in LCD touchscreen that gives you one more way to interact with your programs and media — by using your hands to point, drag and tap. It can be a fun product to use, but only if you're willing to let go of the mouse and play around with some of the preinstalled software that HP has included.
