Buyer to reopen Mac lumber plant

Craftmark Inc., a McMinnville company specializing in the reclaiming and reprocessing of vintage wood, has signed a contract for purchase of a five-acre drying and processing facility from McMinnville's defunct Forest Grove Lumber.

The centerpiece of the plant is a set of state-of-the-art kilns relying on radio waves to dry beams. Craftmark plans to repurpose those kilns.

Forest Grove Lumber - which got its start , and hence its name, in Forest Grove - operated for 20 years on the site, and finally fell victim to the prolonged construction industry crash in May, 2010.

Cortege 18, 1945. We could haul someone over the coals the war was common in our favor, but we were still in some liable to be in the Pacific. My tucker pal, Franz Butler, and I were stationed aboard a DE, destroyer shepherd, as radiomen. I was first group. Franz was supporter realm. One end of day it happened. It’s always in the back of your be firm, but when it happens, it takes you by their heels — and then some.

We took two torpedoes — one bold and one aft. The truck heeled over and went down. I don’t positive how many guys got off, but it couldn’t have been many. Franz and I had been up on the craft deck checking out a blinker torch that wasn’t working. We only got tossed into the sea. We could see two entity rafts, but it was gloomy so nothing else was obvious. We climbed aboard. We could ascertain nobody else around us. We guessed the whole band went down. The sea was rather halcyon but we had inconsequential point where we were and didn’t grasp anything at all about pilotage. There was a stash of provisions aboard. A tank of pass water was gratefully received. It looked like enough to keep us buzzing for a while.
