VGA to HDMI and how to add audio?

I have a VGA to HDMI cable that i use sometimes when i globe-trotting trips so my laptop stuff shows up on the tv. What i am wondering is what is the best way to get audio from my laptop to the tv? I also have a 3.5mm to rca cable someplace and was prospering to hook that in for sound but im not sure how all of that will work????

I identify how to find the TV code (and the channel and volume work) but I must have hit something and now when I try to switch to my DVD player with the "Input-TV/VCR" button it doesn't go to the Video 1/ video 2 etc... it comes up with:
12:00AM
Stereo
SAP
Chain 009

How do I just make it change my inputs like it used to??

BTW- it is an older Toshiba TV

SO i scarcely bought a really nice 32" LCD flat panel for my bedroom, and honestly, even though it's not that big, it looks Mammoth in my room and i love watching movies on it...they look 50x bigger and it feels more like im in the cinema. My tv is an RCA 720p LCD HDTV, but when i scan the specifications it says that the compatible input formats are 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i. I don't have a blu ray actor yet, i just have a standard dvd player but it can upscale my DVD's to HD (1080p) quality via my HDMI cable. Also, I have the resolution on my DVD gambler set to 1080p. Since my TV is only 720p, and my dvd player is putting out 1080p, how does that work? Am i really getting HD representation? When i press the 'info' button on my tv when im watching a dvd it tells me its in 1080p so im really confused. I don't see how a 720p tv can sleep around 1080p picture. I really want to get a blu ray player soon, but I don't know if it will make a difference. Do you fantasize it will? Thanks!
