Nevermind: 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Grunge
* * * * *
Dave Grohl finds it hard to find fault with the 20th anniversary box set of Nevermind. "I think it's pretty great," Nirvana's drummer told me shortly after listening to his advance copy of the Seattle power trio's 1991 grunge classic. "Some of that stuff I haven't heard since the day we recorded it. It's really cool to listen to those three f---ing noisy kids."
Sure, it's a nostalgia trip for him. But for more casual fans, it sheds light on what he, singer-guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic were really about. "I don't think some people have any kind of idea what sort of band Nirvana really was," he claims. "A lot of people think of Nirvana as the band that made Smells Like Teen Spirit, and it kind of stops there. But there's more to it; it's deeper than that. The music before the band got really popular was f---ing weird. There was a lot of noise there before it shifted into this pop craft. I think a lot of people will be surprised."
